How does the credit system work?
Purchasing the mobile app ($20) grants a 30-day cloud credit for one vessel. Gateway Lite ($499) grants a 365-day credit. Gateway Max ($999) grants a 730-day (2-year) credit. Credits stack — buy the app and Gateway Lite together and you get 395 days. When credits expire, subscribe at $99/year to continue cloud access.
Is there a free trial?
There is no standalone free trial. Cloud access is activated by purchasing the mobile app (includes 30 days of cloud), a Gateway (Lite includes 1 year, Max includes 2 years), or subscribing directly at $99/year. This ensures every user is invested from day one.
What is the difference between Gateway Lite and Gateway Max?
Both use the same marine-grade main unit with NMEA interfaces, cellular connectivity, and battery backup. Gateway Lite ($499) is the main unit only (headless) with 1 year of cloud credit — add head units separately at $299 each. Gateway Max ($999) includes the main unit plus 1 head unit and 2 years of cloud credit. Additional head units are $299 each.
Can I monitor multiple vessels?
Yes. Each vessel has its own subscription at $99/year. You can manage multiple vessels from a single account with separate crew for each.
Is crew access free?
Yes. The vessel owner's subscription covers unlimited crew members. Invite your family, friends, or captain — they get full access at no additional cost.
How do I cancel?
Cancel anytime from your account settings or via the Stripe billing portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. No cancellation fees.
What payment methods do you accept?
Credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay via Stripe. Cloud subscriptions are billed directly — not through the App Store — to avoid commission surcharges.
Is my data secure?
Yes. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. We use industry-standard authentication (OIDC via Google and Apple). Your vessel data is never shared with third parties.
What hardware do I need?
HelmWatch works with any SignalK-compatible setup, NMEA 0183/2000 network, or WiFi-enabled NMEA bridge. Most modern marine electronics are compatible. The HelmWatch Gateway (Lite or Max) adds plug-and-play cellular connectivity for boats without existing SignalK.
